Making cups & bowls in the Japanese ceramic tradition
This class is for those with some previous experience with clay. We will use dark stoneware with coloured slips using brush, mishima, and appliqué techniques. For a small extra fee, gold decals and lustres will be available. Part of this class will be spent taking a close look at cups and bowls I collected over my four years studying ceramics in Japan.
$195 + gst (max 4 students) All materials included except gold decals and lustres.
Hand-building
We will learn and use the three basic underpinning hand-building skills: coil, slab, and pinch methods. All students will choose their own project, and I will offer tutoring and guidance for that particular project. We’ll also cover some basic surface design and finishing techniques.
$195 + gst (max 4 students) All materials included.
One-to-one Tutoring
This 5-day private class includes 3 hours of tutoring and 2 hours of daily unsupervised studio work. We will design the course according to your needs: glaze making, throwing, hand-building or sculpture – or all of the above! You decide.
Students will find their own accommodations on Hornby Island and attend class in my studio on their own schedule. My ideal schedule is 10:00 – noon, a 30-minute break, and one more hour until 1:30. Students can then stay for an optional extra 2 hours of practice time at no additional cost.
Work from this class will not be fired. Students will have to bring suitable packaging materials to bring home greenware. Special arrangements can be made to have the work bisque-fired and shipped at their own cost.
$950 + gst includes clay (some materials, ie glaze oxides, will cost extra)
Course must be paid in full upon registration, as I will be closing off the studio to all other teaching possibilities for the week.
